A. Stimulate Your Senses:

What is this place? What is available in this place?

Who is in the photo? What is that person doing?

Where is this place? When was the photo taken?

When does it appear this photo is taken? Now? in the Past?

This picture is taken at IWU's campus. In this photo, the members of IWU Jazz Ensemble are walking around campus for the Jazz Marathon. The photo was taken in March of 1980.

B. Change:

What's changed? What's still the same? What replaced this scene and why?

Since then, things like hairstyles have changed considerably. However, today's instruments do not look any different. The background of the picture looks the same today, for nothing has been done to the Shaw building nor the grounds of IWU.

C. Imagine You Are There:

Write a letter about how your day was when this picture was taken.

Today was a great day! After many long days of practice, the IWU Jazz Ensemble finally got to strut its stuff! We walked all through campus playing the sweet sounds of jazz. Of course there were a few people who gave us some weird looks (like the guy in the background of our picture), but the majority of the campus enjoyed our tunes. I'm sure we will be the talk of campus for the next few days, hopefully. I am so surprised that I didn't get cold being outside. I must have kept warm from the adrenaline! My lips sure are going to be sore tomorrow. And I really need to empty out my valve: it is full of saliva because I was too embarrassed to empty it while we were playing. I am pumped about next year already!!

Danielle,

It seems as though you really enjoy the IWU Jazz Ensemble. I heard you guys marching through the quad today, and you sounded great. You looked very professional as well. I'm surprised you don't get more tired marching through campus. It was very cold today, too. As for the guy in the background of the picture, he's just jealous that he doesn't have the ability to play the sweet sounds of jazz or strut his stuff like you guys can. He told me. What are your favorite songs to play with the Jazz Ensemble? Do you guys practice every day? Does this picture include every member of the ensemble, or are there more? Keep the Jazz Age alive!
